MAPS TO HOME

In each of these paintings, pages from road atlases or maps are glued and gessoed as an underpainting, and then scraped away in part to either reveal parts of a figure or background, or they are incorporated into a drawing, then the painting.

The maps are embedded into the composition to represent places, journeys, roads, travels, that become part of a person through time and experience. They reveal the person's attachment to an idea of home, and they try to help us understand the relationship between place, home, and belonging.
