ABSTRACTS

In my abstract paintings, a viewer can be led to deeper emotional, even spiritual, participation, through suggestion, not realistic representation or message delivery. Specifically, my abstractions explore optimism and hope—in all of its inexplicable and mysterious complexity, as something crucial but elusive, and not a simplistic antidote to suffering.

If these paintings are making a social statement, it is a call to pay attention to the privileged moments of not suffering in our lives. My process in abstraction is one of constant revision with brush and palette knife, layering and scraping, creating and revising shapes and colors that, in parts and in sum, interact to create a holistic, abstract expression of hope and vitality.
